BC Place Vancouver: World Cup 2026 complete guide
BC Place will host seven matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, including all three of Canada's home group-stage games and three Round of 32 matches. The stadium, situated in downtown Vancouver at 777 Pacific Boulevard, opened in 1983 as the world's largest air-supported domed stadium. A transformative $563 million renovation completed in 2011 replaced the air-dome with North America's largest cable-supported retractable roof β a 28,000 square metre PTFE-coated fibreglass structure that opens fully within 20 minutes.
History and significance
BC Place has hosted some of Canadian sport's most significant moments. The stadium served as the venue for both the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics, welcoming the nation's athletes and the international Olympic family. In 2015, it hosted the FIFA Women's World Cup Final between the United States and Japan β the most-watched women's sporting event in history at the time, drawing 26.7 million US viewers. The experience proved that Vancouver can successfully stage a major FIFA tournament. In 2026, BC Place returns to FIFA's biggest stage, this time with the men's tournament.
The artificial surface debate
BC Place plays on Shaw Blue Zone Field, an artificial FieldTurf surface. FIFA has certified it for international competition following modifications to meet the FIFA Quality Pro standard. The surface meets FIFA's requirements for ball bounce, roll, shock absorption and rotational resistance. However, some player unions have raised concerns about injury risk on artificial turf compared to natural grass; FIFA's position is that the surface meets all technical requirements. Players from national teams that qualify for Vancouver group-stage games may raise this as a negotiating point with team medical staff.

BMO Field Toronto: World Cup 2026 complete guide
BMO Field is Canada's largest soccer-specific stadium and the home of Toronto FC in Major League Soccer. Located at Exhibition Place on Toronto's Lake Ontario waterfront, the stadium was constructed in 2007 with an initial capacity of just 20,000 β but has since been expanded to 30,000 and then to its current World Cup-ready capacity of 45,736, making it one of North America's largest soccer-dedicated venues.
The expansion for World Cup 2026
The final expansion phase β adding approximately 15,000 seats to bring capacity to 45,736 β was completed by July 2025. Work included the addition of a north end upper deck, enhanced media facilities exceeding FIFA broadcasting standards, two additional VIP clubs, and a complete pitch drainage overhaul meeting FIFA's new Quick-Change specifications. The expanded BMO Field now meets all requirements to host up to the Round of 16 level in the World Cup.
Getting to BMO Field
From Union Station in downtown Toronto, the 509 Harbourfront and 511 Bathurst streetcars both serve Exhibition Place directly. Journey time from Union Station platforms to the BMO Field entrance is approximately 12 minutes off-peak. On match days, Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) operates significantly increased frequency on both routes. GO Train services from surrounding regions use Union Station as a hub. Toronto Pearson International Airport is accessible via Union Pearson Express (UPX) to Union Station; total airport-to-stadium transit time runs approximately 45 minutes from terminal arrival. The 401 highway provides the primary road access for fans driving from southern Ontario, Quebec and the northeastern United States.
