Canada's Two World Cup Venues

For the first time in Canadian history, the FIFA World Cup comes home. Two iconic stadiums will host matches: BC Place in Vancouver (54,500 seats, retractable roof) and BMO Field in Toronto (45,736 seats, expanded for the tournament). Together they will stage 13 matches across the group stage and Round of 32.

BC Place's distinctive white PTFE retractable roof — the first in Canada — makes it one of the most visually striking World Cup venues. The stadium hosted the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup Final and is the home ground of the Vancouver Whitecaps in MLS. BMO Field, on Toronto's waterfront at Exhibition Place, was purpose-expanded and represents Canada's largest dedicated soccer-specific stadium.

MetLife Stadium — The Final Venue

MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, will host the FIFA World Cup 2026 Final on July 19, 2026. The stadium has a capacity of 82,500 and is the home of both the New York Giants and New York Jets in the NFL. Located just 8 miles west of Manhattan, it represents the most accessible major tournament final in World Cup history — within 2 hours of approximately 20 million people.

Built in 2010 for $1.6 billion, MetLife is one of the most modern stadium facilities in North America. It will host 8 matches in total: one group stage game, two Round of 32 matches, one quarter-final, and the Final. The stadium sits in the Meadowlands Sports Complex alongside the Meadowlands Racetrack and the former Giants Stadium site.

Estadio Azteca — Where It All Begins

The 2026 World Cup opens on June 11 at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City — the only stadium in history to have hosted two World Cup Finals (1970 and 1986). Built in 1966 and seating 87,523, it is the largest stadium in today's World Cup and stands at 2,240 metres above sea level, giving altitude an important tactical role in every match.

The Azteca hosted Pelé's third World Cup title in 1970 and the infamous "Hand of God" goal by Diego Maradona in 1986. It has seen more historic World Cup moments than any other venue on earth. In 2026, it will stage five matches under FIFA's new expanded format, including the tournament opening ceremony and the first Group A fixture.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup: a stadium guide for Canadian fans

The 2026 FIFA World Cup marks a turning point in the history of the tournament. For the first time, three nations jointly host — Canada, the United States and Mexico — bringing the competition to 16 separate stadiums spread across 13 cities. Total capacity across all venues exceeds 1.8 million seats, making this the logistically largest World Cup ever staged.

How many stadiums will host the 2026 World Cup?

Sixteen stadiums are confirmed for the 2026 FIFA World Cup: two in Canada (BC Place, BMO Field), eleven in the United States (MetLife, AT&T Stadium, SoFi, Rose Bowl, Hard Rock, Lumen Field, Gillette, Lincoln Financial, Arrowhead, NRG, Mercedes-Benz, Levi's), and three in Mexico (Estadio Azteca, Estadio BBVA, Estadio Akron). Canada's venues perform particularly heavily in the group stage, with BC Place hosting Canada's three home matches plus additional Round of 32 games.

Which stadium hosts the World Cup 2026 Final?

MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey will host the World Cup 2026 Final on July 19, 2026. With a capacity of 82,500, MetLife is one of the largest and most modern NFL stadiums in North America. It sits in the New York metropolitan area, accessible from New York Penn Station via New Jersey Transit rail — a 30-minute journey from midtown Manhattan. Hotel accommodation across the NJ/NY area is forecast to sell out within weeks of the Final bracket being confirmed.

Canadian stadium guide: BC Place vs BMO Field

BC Place in Vancouver opened in 1983 and underwent a $563 million renovation completed in 2011, including the installation of North America's largest cable-supported retractable roof. The stadium sits in downtown Vancouver adjacent to Pacific Boulevard, walkable from most city hotels and served by the Canada Line SkyTrain (Main Street–Science World station, 10-minute walk). BMO Field in Toronto sits on the waterfront at Exhibition Place, accessible via the 509 and 511 streetcar lines from Union Station — approximately a 12-minute ride. It was expanded from 30,000 to 45,736 seats specifically for the 2026 World Cup.

Altitude and weather: what fans need to know

Three venues present notable climate considerations. Estadio Azteca in Mexico City sits at 2,240m (7,349 ft) above sea level — players typically take 48–72 hours to acclimatise. NRG Stadium in Houston is the only US venue with a retractable roof and air conditioning, making it the coolest summer venue aside from BC Place (which also has a retractable roof). Hard Rock Stadium in Miami is the warmest outdoor venue, with average July temperatures around 33°C and high humidity — important for fans purchasing tickets for 3rd place match fixtures. Rose Bowl in Pasadena operates in a Mediterranean climate and is the coolest of the California venues.
